In this chapter, we will discuss the server-less architecture. Server-less means that there will be no servers to manage for application deployment. We will be focusing on AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway, and Alexa. AWS Lambda is the logic layer of server-less architecture; we will discuss its features and best practices in detail; so that you can build your applications on the AWS platform with ease.
What is Server-less?
More than a decade ago, IT administrators had to worry about the provision and management of the organization’s servers. These heavy machines and all the associated hardware needed to be taken care of as these were the backbone of the IT environments. The IT people were desperately in need of something that could help in lessening their administrative load. In 2006, the server-less concept came into being and became popular very soon.
Server-less computing is a cloud-based execution model, a form of utility computing, where the cloud service providers act as the server and manage the allocation of resources dynamically. It is also called “Function-as-a-Service” (FaaS).
